Prairie D'Ane Battlefield Acquisition Effort
The Battle of Prairie D'Ane ended 151 years ago. But the campaign for the acquisition of the battlefield at Prairie D'Ane continues.
We need your help.
You can help us develop this pivotal piece of Arkansas history and help bring more heritage tourism dollars to our communities.
The Nevada County Depot & Museum raised one million dollars towards purchase and closing costs to solidify the preservation of 448 acres of the Civil War site on the Little Missouri River running along Nevada and Clark counties for Elkins' Ferry. Now the more than 800 acre parcel of land that is Prairie D'Ane is available and is not far from Interstate-30 and can be developed into a multi-use gateway into our towns and toward other Camden Expedition sites in Dallas, Grant, Hempstead, Ouachita, and Nevada counties. Nine locations in the greater area are part of the Camden Expedition National Historic Landmark.
This is significant because there are only 16 NHLs in Arkansas.
In early April 1864, almost 14,000 Union troops crossed the Little Missouri River at Elkins' Ferry. By the time survivors headed back to Little Rock a month later, they had faced about that many Confederates. These 28,000 soldiers came from Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Texas, Wisconsin, and Indian Territory as well as Arkansas of whose descendants are amongst our potential visitors.
Now the Prairie D'Ane Battlefield has become a possibility and an estimated 27,000 vehicles travel I-30 each day and those drivers and their passengers could be potential visitors.
Now that Elkins' Ferry has been preserved, the Nevada Co. Depot & Museum is raising funds to purchase the Prairie D'Ane Battlefield to increase public access and awareness of the hallowed ground that has long lain silent beneath the footfalls of the great men and women who have called Nevada County their home.

Thank you to those who Joined us April 12, 2014 in honoring the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Prairie D'Ane
in Nevada County, Arkansas.
"Like an oasis lies this beautiful prairie in midst of dense forests and almost impassable swamps, a relief for the eyes of the traveler, who has for many days hardly seen anything but rocks crowned by dark pines or the gloomy cypress swamp."
-Lieutenant Colonel Adolph Dengler, USA
"The artillery duel was terrible and magnificent. The broad prairie stretched away smoothly as a sea of glass. The long lines of cavalry on either side of the guns, and over all the bursting bombs and white powder clouds, came fast and furious."
- Brigadier General Joseph O. Shelby, CSA
